Ashbourne, Derbyshire

Spend a morning or an afternoon pottering about the cobbled streets of Ashbourne; it’s an attractive town right on the edge of the Peak District, with some admirable historic buildings including centuries old almshouses and coaching inns. The shops are mostly independent and still run by the same families who’ve owned them for generations, and once a week there’s an open air market that gives the town a happy, bustling atmosphere. When you’re here you may as well stop for a bite to eat; try Artisan Café Bar & Bottle Shop or the George & Dragon. Within a few miles, the Horseshoes, the Ostrich Inn and the Lighthouse Restaurant are excellent.
