Church View Retreat offers peace and quiet in the beautiful countryside of South Derbyshire, just a short drive from the Peak District. Tucked away down a private track, it feels like a world of your own where you can truly unwind and leave the stresses of modern life behind. There are 18 acres to stroll around at your leisure; you can get up in the morning and go and collect fresh eggs from the chickens, and in the autumn you can help yourself to apples in the orchard, a wonderful sight in the springtime when the trees are in blossom.
The thing with Church View Retreat is that it’s lovely and private, completely self-contained, so there’s no one to bother you; in fact, you won’t even hear any traffic, because it’s hidden away down the winding country lanes, surrounded by open fields and woodland. Wake up to blackbirds singing, hear owls hooting at night, it’s a dream; the church spire rises through the trees in the near distance, a wonderful vista in the morning mists. It all used to be part of the Trusley Estate and in Victorian times was stabling and a gamekeeper’s cottage, all built of the warm red brick that’s characteristic of this area.
Church View Retreat has three properties for holidays and short breaks, all standing to three sides of a central courtyard; Butterpot Cottage is a cosy retreat for up to 4, and Bumblebee Barn sleeps 10 people, making it ideal for family holidays, gatherings of friends, hen weekends and corporate breaks. Both cottages have a hot tub, and inside have been tastefully designed with the rustic character enhanced by solid oak latch and brace doors, original ceiling beams and chunky natural wood windowsills. There is sandstone or slate flooring in both cottages, with underfloor heating throughout and all the high quality comforts you need for a relaxing break.
The main house, Church View Retrat is a spacious house will sleep 15 guests in 5 bedrooms which 3 have ensuites. A indoor sauna, pool table, table foorball, table tennis, large outdoor hot tub to sit 7 guests, 2 football goals for that family game. All three properties can be booked together for large group holidays for up to 30 guests - great for a few families, celebrations, hen weekends and corporate team building or away days.
All properties have use of the front courtyard, attractively laid out with wide pathways, outdoor table tennis, planters and seating.
There’s much to see and do in this part of the world; the spectacular landscape of the Peak District is within easy reach and offers a multitude of places to go walking, cycling or horse riding; you can get out and visit some of the magnificent historic houses nearby, like Bolsover Castle, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, and of course, Chatsworth House. The pretty market town of Ashbourne is only a short drive away and is very nice for a browse, with good shops and eateries. Spend the day in Derby where you can see the cathedral, grab some retail therapy, or browse the museums. Alton Towers is only 16 miles away, and there are several country parks where the young ‘uns can run about and let off steam – Poole’s Cavern and Country Park, Heights of Abraham, and Conkers are all great. Have a glide along the Cromford Canal on a painted narrowboat, or an amble around Buxton.
Foodies will love the abundance of local produce – Betty’s Farm Shop and Croots Farm Shop are only a short drive, and when it comes to eating out – well! The Horseshoes, The Ostrich, and The Lighthouse Restaurant at Ashbourne are all very good, and likewise The Cow at Dalbury Lees, but there are plenty more and you’ll find lots of inspiration on our Things To Do pages.
